El jurado de la Bienal Española de Arquitectura ha decidido adjudicar el premio de arquitectura al edificio de los Teatros del Canal de Juan Navarro Baldeweg, y al Caixa Forum de Herzog y De Meuron, el premio a la construcción de ciudad.
Emilio Tuñón, uno de los directores de la Bienal, justifica así la decisión del jurado:
[El Teatro del Canal] Es una de las obras más importantes de Madrid realizada por un maestro, que también es profesor de la generación que ahora trabaja. Navarro Baldeweg combina siempre la idea muy poética del espacio con la construcción arquitectónica. Resuelve un problema urbano y planta unos grandes teatros de la Administración, muy demandados, con una resolución impecable.
Herzog & De Meuron, quizás los mejores arquitectos del mundo, han realizado una obra feliz que resuelve un problema de primera magnitud. Interviene en la ciudad quitando una gasolinera y añadiendo un muro verde. El conjunto revitaliza la cultura y además ensancha el paseo del Prado.
…el arquitecto no tiene miedo de enfrentarse al problema del mañana, el de la energía y la sostenibilidad. La arquitectura española siempre ha sido muy equilibrada, ciertamente poco amiga de los excesos. Y en momentos de crisis no queda más remedio que lograr ese equilibrio entre los objetivos y los medios.
